The math that sends people to the hardware store is honest math. A flush stainless marine cup holder runs about fourteen dollars — Boat Outfitters lists their 4.25-inch model at $14.16 — the 5/8-inch drain hose it connects to is sold separately. A hole saw is another twelve. You've got the boat on the trailer anyway. Four new holders across the rear lounge and the port bench, one Saturday morning, done.
What isn't printed on the box is the three things that decide whether that Saturday was cheap or expensive: what's behind the surface you're about to cut, where the drink goes once it's in there, and which of the several warranties covering your boat you just stepped outside of.
This is that accounting. It ends with a real answer, and for some boats the answer is yes.
Start with the actual dimensions, because almost nobody checks them before they start marking.
That Boat Outfitters holder needs a 3.64-inch cutout, has a 3.5-inch inside diameter, a 4.25-inch flange to cover the cut edge, and is 3.625 inches deep — and then a 5/8-inch drain hose has to come off the bottom and go somewhere. Call it four and a half inches of clear, dry, accessible space directly under wherever you put the saw, plus a hose run.
Now walk your deck and ask where that space actually exists.
The bench and lounge cushions. Modern pontoon furniture is a molded plastic tub with foam and vinyl on top. EverythingPontoon's construction spec for their Platinum benches is typical of the category: a RotoCast plastic base, marine foam 5 inches deep at the front of the cushion tapering to 3 inches at the back, 31-ounce marine vinyl — and, critically, "a sealed raised bottom with recessed water channels which divert the water away from stored items and sends the water out drain holes in the back of the base unit." Read that to the end: the base is a storage locker with its own four-drain water-management scheme, engineered to keep what you put inside it dry. Cut a cup holder through the seat top and you go through vinyl, through five inches of foam, through the lid of that locker, and your holder now drains onto the life jackets rather than into the channels built to carry water out. There is no void up there. There's a compartment.
The armrest. This is where the factory usually put them, and there is often a cavity — which is precisely why the arm is also where the trouble starts (below).
The helm console. Genuinely the best candidate on most boats: rigid, usually fiberglass or molded plastic, and often with real space behind. It is also where the wiring lives. Owners on the iboats boards who have cut these holes in fiberglass are blunt about this — one tells you to make sure "theres nothing behind the fiberglass" before the saw goes in, and another warns that "Sharp hole saws tend to grab and jump out of the pilot hole, so be careful when you are starting to drill."
The deck. A floor-mounted holder means going through plywood into the under-deck void, which on a pontoon is not empty. It's where the fuel tank lives — Moeller's permanent below-deck pontoon tank is a 48 x 16 x 15.46-inch box — along with the main harness, the sender wiring, and the bonding wire. And on a lot of newer boats that whole underside is closed in by a wave shield or performance undershield, meaning you cannot see what you're drilling toward even with the boat on the trailer. That's a blind cut over a fuel tank. Don't.
The pedestal table. Thin, unsupported, and already the one shared surface everybody reaches across.
So of five candidate surfaces, one is a real yes, one is a maybe, and three are somewhere between "you're cutting into a sealed compartment" and "you're drilling toward a fuel tank you can't see."
Here's the failure that surprises people, because it doesn't happen in year one. It happens in year five.
An owner on the iboats forums, describing tears all the way around three of his pontoon's cup holders, worked out the mechanism himself: "the cuts that were originally made in the vinyl for the cupholder have continued to tear as the vinyl has shrunk a bit over the years."
That's exactly right, and it's worth understanding, because it's the difference between a hole that lasts and a hole that becomes a bill. Marine vinyl on a boat that lives outside is a material under slow tension — it's stretched over foam, stapled at the perimeter, and it loses a little dimension to UV and heat cycling every season. Anywhere you make a cut edge in a tensioned membrane, you've made a stress riser. The material can't relieve the load across that line, so the load concentrates at the two ends of the cut and the tear walks outward. A factory cutout has the vinyl relaxed and secured around the opening, with a flange sized to carry the edge. A field cut, made with the vinyl already stretched over a finished seat, usually has neither.
Note what that means: the tear shows up three, four, five summers after the modification, long after you've stopped connecting the two things.
The quoted fix in that thread is the part to sit with. The local upholsterer's answer was to "re-upholster the entire seat (or at least the arm)." Not patch the hole. Recover the panel — because a tear that has propagated through a stretched cover can't be sewn back into tension.
And here's the sting: the vinyl failure you just created is the one your warranty was already never going to cover. Bennington's model-year 2025 limited warranty gives ten years on "Deck covering and fabric due to excessive fading, peeling, or cracking" and then says in the next breath: "Damage resulting in rips, tears, snags, and unraveling or other abuse is not covered under this warranty." Rips and tears were always on you. Cutting the vinyl is manufacturing the exact defect class that sits outside the coverage.
This is the pontoon-specific problem, and it's the one that never comes up in the Facebook thread.
On a V-hull, a cup-holder drain is a solved geometry. You run 3/8-inch clear vinyl hose up inside the gunwale and out through a push-in drain fitting in the hull side. Boating magazine's how-to on rod- and cup-holder drains spells out both why you bother and what happens if you don't: water that pours into the tubes and accumulates inside the gunwales ends up "soaking the foam, adding weight and promoting mold and mildew," and — the line worth reading twice — "cup holders can drain into wiring, causing shorts and corrosion."
A pontoon has no gunwale. The deck is the boundary, and "outside" is the void between the logs where the tank, the harness and the cross members live. So you get three options and none of them is clean:
There's a fourth path that's easy to miss: water into an armrest cavity that has no way out. Marine cushion foam is a sponge with a schedule. The trade publication Marine Fabricator, writing about cushion foam failures, describes stagnant water where "the seams allowed the water and mold to seep into the polyfoam." An armrest holder without a drain, or with a drain that dumps into the arm's own cavity, keeps that cavity wet from May to September. Foam that stays wet doesn't come back.
Most owners assume "it's just a cup holder" puts this below the threshold anybody cares about. Read the document you already own.
Taking Bennington's MY2025 limited warranty as the example — the language is representative of the category, though yours may differ and you should read yours:
Then look at what you'd be cutting into. The longest coverage on that boat — limited lifetime — is on "Structural failure on pontoon tubes, gates, motor mounts, railings, under decks," plus "Wooden decks" and "Wood components." The plywood deck is the single best-covered part of your pontoon. It is also the part a floor-mount cup holder puts a hole through.
The fair counterweight, because this cuts both ways: federal warranty law does not let a manufacturer void everything just because you bolted something on. The FTC's own guidance to businesses on federal warranty law says "Generally, tie-in sales provisions aren’t allowed" — with narrow exceptions, a warrantor can't condition coverage on using only its own parts. What the FTC does permit is the narrower exclusion, in its own example language: "Damage caused to the [product] by you or any non-authorized third party, however, may void this warranty."
Read those two together and the practical rule falls out cleanly:
Adding an accessory doesn't void your boat. Damaging your boat while adding it does.
Which is exactly why a bolt-on sits in a completely different risk class than a cutout, and why the shape of the modification matters more than the fact of it.
Fourteen dollars for the holder. Here's what's on the other side of the ledger if the cut goes wrong — and remember it goes wrong on a delay, in year four or five, when you've stopped associating the tear with the afternoon.
Look at that last line for a second, because it reframes the entire project.
Not never. There are four honest yeses:
And one that isn't cutting at all but solves the same problem better than cutting does: the bolt-on arm. A replacement pontoon seat arm with two holders already in it — PontoonStuff's is $109.99 — installs by drilling in two places from the base of the seat into the arm and securing it with the two stud bolts and wingnuts supplied. You are putting two bolt-sized holes in a molded plastic base instead of a 3.64-inch hole through tensioned vinyl. No cut edge in the cover, no new water path into foam, no cutout to tear in 2031, and it comes off the boat as easily as it went on. If you want built-in holders on a pontoon, this — not a hole saw — is the version that ages well.
Here's the thing that would have changed the decision if anyone had said it first.
The hole you cut is still can-sized.
The 4.25-inch Boat Outfitters holder — the oversized one — has a 3.5-inch inside diameter. Most flush marine holders are smaller. Now measure what your crew actually brings aboard. L.L.Bean lists the Stanley 40 oz Quencher at "12.3"H x 3.1" diam. at base." A 3.1-inch base sitting in a 3.5-inch ring has four-tenths of an inch of slop all the way around, and twelve inches of tumbler standing above it. It won't drop in and lock; it'll perch and rattle, and a wake will walk it out of the ring. Hard can coolers and fat-bottomed tumblers do worse.
So the honest end-state of a successful, well-executed cut-in job is: you spent a Saturday, you accepted a permanent cut edge in your upholstery, you created a water path, you stepped across a warranty line — and the 40-ounce tumbler that started this whole thing still doesn't sit right.
The factory rings weren't undersized by accident. They were sized for a bare 12-ounce can, back when that was what most people carried aboard. Your crew's containers changed. Cutting more holes at the old diameter just makes more of the wrong holder.
There's a second way to give a container a stable place to sit, and it runs opposite to everything above: instead of removing material from the boat to sink the container down into it, you widen what the container stands on.
That's the whole idea behind Steadi. It's one piece of Shore 85A TPU — not silicone — 2.8 inches tall, with a base that's a fixed 5.2 inches across. The base does not expand, contract or deform. Flexible fins rise from it and flex inward to grip the bottom inch of whatever you set in it; the TPU's natural tack resists the container sliding.

Cut only to repair a hole that already exists, or into a rigid panel you have physically looked behind. For everything else — every cushion, every sun pad, every seat top, every square foot of deck — the honest answer is that a 3.64-inch hole is a permanent, delayed, warranty-adjacent liability bought in exchange for a ring that still won't fit the tumbler that started the argument.
Bolt something on, or set something down. Both of those you can undo. A hole you can't.
